Travel by Metro  Last updated: May 27, 2010

Servicing 5 million commuters a day, the Metro is the main form of transport for the people in Shanghai. It is convenient and affordable with a minimum fare of 3 yuan (44 US cents) for 6 kilometers and below, and has six direct lines to the Expo that run till midnight.

During peak hours, Metro lines 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9 will provide services for up to 100,000 commuters every hour to nine stations near the Expo site. Trains will run every six minutes during non peak, and every three minutes during peak hours. Starting from May 24, trains will continue to depart from 12 stations near the Expo site after 10:30 pm. Trains will run every 15 minutes from 10:30 pm to 11 pm and 20 to 25 minutes after 11 pm. The last train will depart at 0:10 am of the next day.

Seven stations will be opened as connecting stops in lines serving the Expo site. These stations are Century Avenue Station (Line 4, 6, 9), Dongan Rd Station (Lines 4, 7), Lancun Rd Station (Line 4, 5), Yishan Rd Station (Line 4, 9), Zhenping Rd Station (Line 4,7), Lujiabang Rd Station (Line 8, 9) and Zhaojiabang Rd Station (Line 7, 9). Trains passing the seven interchange stations will be one-way. Passengers are only allowed to interchange within the stations. No re-entry is allowed after exit.

Line 13, which finished construction in February, will take passengers straight to three stations within the site – two in Puxi (western side of the Huangpu River) and another in Pudong (the eastern side). These three stations -- Danshui Rd Station, Madang Rd Station and Changqing Rd Station -- have been built for the Expo and boost six-carriage trains that carry 40,000 passengers per hour.
