Introduction  Last updated: Apr 28, 2010

The World Expo 2010 in Shanghai will be the first time that a world exposition has been held in the heart of such a populous city. In preparation, the Shanghai government has taken steps to meet the traffic demands of at least 70 million visitors from all over the world. The city’s metro lines, highways, and elevated expressways have been upgraded to aid in reducing traffic congestion, particularly around the Expo Site.

Nonetheless, Expo visitors should be prepared for crowded trains, buses, and roads. As the Expo Site opens daily at 9 am, morning traffic towards the site will coincide with rush hour traffic as people head to work. While ideally, it is possible to reach the Expo Site within 30 minutes starting from an urban area and within 90 minutes from a suburban area, overcrowding, road congestion, and service delays in busy areas are inevitable as half a million people swarm towards the site. As such, it is important to be aware of how best to avoid congestion and reach the Expo Site effectively.

Entrances that have enjoyed little to no traffic are Gate 3 in Puxi, Gate 8 in Pudong, and water entry.
